No matter how fired up and ready to go you are, you are confronted today by the reality that life is a process that cannot be rushed. Excellence takes time, just ask the seasonal fruit that is forced to wait its turn, regardless of how eager it may be to bloom into its fated beauty. Why, though, does this slow and steady development have to be such an existential crisis?
Maybe it has something to do with the way your mind wanders when you have no choice but to be still and wait. Perhaps the fact that your seed hasn’t yet blossomed reminds you of some old instance when you anticipated a yield that didn’t quite live up to your dreams, or even worse, a yield that never actually yielded anything at all. It’s almost tempting not to dream at all when you remember the embarrassment, especially when it seems like the fruits of your neighbor’s garden are the talk of the town.
What if instead of getting lost in fantasies of failure, you choose to forgive your “shortcomings”, and re-diagnose all self-inflicted handicaps as charming character quirks? There is no rule that says you have to wait to love yourself until the moment your petals have peaked at their highest potential. Oh no, you can love yourself right now, wherever you are in your journey. In fact, you must love yourself now if you ever plan on achieving maximum growth and the admiration, both external and internal, that comes along with being ripe.
If you don’t fit the standards that have shaped your definition of “good enough”, then your most urgent mission is to redefine those standards in a way that celebrates the unique brand of beauty you’ve been sent here to cultivate, because you are worthy whether you believe it or not. There’s no use in comparing apples and oranges, so instead of weighing the quality of your current condition against someone else’s, why not adopt an abundant approach? Everyone has their place in the sun, so one person soaking up the rays does not leave any less light for you.
When the ego is kept in check, things that were threatening become inspirational, and resentment is transcended by love in the most organic sense. You are realizing that although bitter berries eventually sweeten, they are no less divine in the meantime. Using your old inadequacies to boost your self-esteem in the present by living with them in a more compassionate and glamorous [yes, glamorous] context is the antidote that will relieve stunted growth and fertilize the soil to ensure a most bountiful harvest to those who are patient enough to allow nature to unfold.
