There comes a point in time when the mind remembers everything. Without time to prepare, it all comes back to you at once, one unresolved incident on top of another. Although you can’t see thoughts, the pressure of the stress they can induce could outmuscle the most goliath forces. Gravity, for example, is much less feared. Or maybe it is gravity itself that becomes so much more oppressive in those moments of mental disturbance, when every deed you’ve ever done reemerges from the obscure unconscious with unapologetic clarity and, at the same time, fearful distortion. It doesn’t help that you revert back to the same caustic thought pattern that you had when “it” first happened.
At this very moment, you are comprised of all your experiences. They are stored within you, and they influence your behavior today, whether you like it or not. These memories cannot be erased nor done away with. They live, even when we think they’re long dead. Instead of trying to kill the past, why not try a more sustainable approach?
Recycling isn’t just for bottles and cans. In this day and age, anything can be reused and renewed. There’s something about taking on a second life that makes the subject that much better than it was before. Instead of recalling a pivotal moment from the past in the same way you did, maybe it’s time think differently about it.
Maybe you could prescribe new adjectives and express emotions that were previously unarticulated to the situation your revisit. Perhaps each extreme negative response you have to a particular occurrence could be counteracted by a deliberate response of the opposite positive extreme [there’s always another angle]. Have you ever tried replaying that big, life-altering moment with a completely different, albeit uncharacteristic, narrative? It may feel unnatural, because we’re conditioned to grow attached to emotional one-dimensionality, but you are being encouraged to evolve beyond your initial trauma in order to reclaim your power by having the audacity to benefit from what is considered to be beyond malignant.
Suffering is a learned trait, a choice. Why not choose to improve your holistic condition instead? If you are in need of a complete and total transformation, today is your day to pray and meditate it into exist, as the atmosphere is receptive and responsive to wishes of all kinds.
