shining a light on the shadow [#ShadySun]

The better part of the last year and a half was spent putting a lot of energy into my old YouTube Channel. Projects such as Improv ThursDaze and AstroLoco were rough around the edges, but they were learning experiences for which I am truly grateful and proud. At this point, for a multitude of reasons, it is clear that my old channel has served its purpose. It is time to expand Shady Sun by using what I have built as a foundation to continue breaking through the barriers that stand in the way of illumination.

I have recently created a BRAND NEW Shady Sun YouTube Channel. Although I was reluctant to move on from what I spent so long cultivating, I needed the inspiration of a blank slate. Shady Sun’s potential is more limitless than ever, and even though it is being revamped, the goal is still to bring awareness to the masses.

My newest project is called #StarsAndSymbols. Astrology is great, and it was obviously my focus, but I was impelled to encompass a broader spectrum of occult imagery. This will be a learning experience for everyone, as we investigate and interpret icons of all sorts, familiar and unfamiliar. In life, we must follow all the signs, because the universe is constantly trying to tell us something. Continue reading

SUN in LEO 2013
(July 22 – August 22)

You have to act like a king to be treated like a king, and the regal lion Leo plays the part very well. Sun-ruled Leo leads with its heart, so this sign draws strength from being the center of attention, surrounded by love.

how dark are your roots?: cancer [astroloco]

The obituary at my great-grandmother’s funeral last march was extremely revealing to me, as I knew and still know very little about my family history. I found out my great-grandmother had a sister (my great-great aunt?) who died at an early age. To my surprise, my great-great aunt was actually killed. She was burned alive in front of her house by a group of Caucasians who didn’t like the fact that her skin was fair enough to pass for white. This was obviously decades ago, when hate crimes like this happened much more frequently, but still this was shocking to me. My 40-something year old mom didn’t even know about the murder of my great-great aunt, which completely baffles me. How could I go a whole 22 years unaware of such a traumatic ancestral tragedy, especially when this tragedy lives within me and my relatives, subconsciously imprinted in my genealogical memory?

We hear a lot about the baggage we carry from our own past, but what about all that we inherit from our families? Imagine the century’s worth of lineages that are affected by just one single unintegrated traumatic event. Think of all the trans-generational karma we are living out due to the psychological disturbances we choose to repress and pass on to our offspring. Cancer, the mother of the zodiac, is the astrological representation of our roots; where we come from, who we are, and how we feel about it all. We must remember our issues, like still water, run deeper than we can fathom.

rideshare with a spider: saturn (direct) in scorpio [astroloco]

Remember how I said I was afraid of bugs? Today I came face to face with one of my biggest conceivable fears. Years ago my cousin told me about the time she was driving her car and along came a spider crawling across her windshield. She too is scared of insects, and she nearly crashed her car at the mere sight and proximity of the arachnid. I know it is irrational to react like that, but I feared this scenario because I had no clue how I would handle myself while operating a vehicle, although I was way too young to drive when I heard this story. As you all know, I am now a driving man, and earlier I found myself in a similar situation.

After running errands for my upcoming 5th annual family cookout (barbecue if you’re confused), I hopped back the whip (my mom’s Honda Pilot) and drove off. I was so ready to be back home so I could make myself a quick smoothie before I indulged in enough Skinny Pop to offend a Monsanto cornfield.

~smoothie~
(Here’s the smoothie I made yesterday. I swear it tastes better than it looks.)

They say it’s healthier to eat fruits and fibrous veggies first, for digestion and shit like that. As I pulled out of the shopping center parking lot, I caught a peripheral glimpse of tiny terror; there was a spider on my sun visor (aka my personal vanity).

Although the spider was small, my nervous system went into immediate and dangerous overdrive. Since I was literally driving, I planned to pull over as soon as I could, as I did not want this spider descending down onto my forehead or my lap or any other part of my body while I was operating the vehicle. Of course if I pulled over, I’d either have to wait for the creature to crawl out or physically remove it from the premises, neither of which I had time for (Skinny Pop, remember?). After being forced to endure this discomfort for a few seconds, I got the vibe that the spider was just as stricken. She was still and so was I. I decided to keep driving.

After being retrograde since February, Saturn has finally resumed direct motion in Scorpio. Where Saturn goes our caution follows, and when Saturn is in Scorpio, the darkest of our fears are confronted in an intensely psychological way. Saturn’s nearly 5 month-long backtrack saw us re-examining our power structures. We were forced to get real about wasting resources, using more discipline, and harnessing the mutually transformative, creative potential of synergy.

a bird’s nest: cancer new moon [astroloco]

About a month or 2 ago, my family and I noticed a nest being constructed by a mother bird atop the ledge of our front door. Every time we went to enter or exit our house, we would disturb the bird, and she’d fly away. The loud, crisp flapping of her wings would startle me the first couple times, but eventually I began to anticipate her and she stopped flying away. My mom wanted to knock the nest down, but I thought it was special that out of all the houses on my street, she chose ours to call her home. We left the nest unbothered.

After her eggs hatched into baby birds, one of which I believe I caught a glimpse, I started seeing her less and less. The nest is still there, but the birds have flown elsewhere. I kind of miss seeing them perched above our doorway. Reminded me that although we are a suburban family, we are still living in nature (as if I weren’t still recovering from Pamela the Possum). Although they are not here anymore, they can return whenever they want, and they will be received the warmest of welcomes.

What is home? Is it the place we were born or the place we were raised? Or is it where we are? Maybe home is where we are going, or better yet where we want to be! As the birds know, home is any place that our wings spread, and even beyond the beds on which we rest. Regardless of our current residences, the nest will always be there, whether in the physical realm or in the sentimental dimension of memories. The New Moon in Cancer gives us the support we need to finally release our grip on the past. We feel secure enough to live in the present and foster the development of our emotional wellbeing, creative imagination, friends and family.

Life in the sky is full of ups, downs, wanes and waxes, but all is well when we fly with the wind, embracing each gust as it comes. No matter where the wind may carry us, we will always wind up exactly where we need to be. Welcome home!

finding familiarity: jupiter in cancer [astroloco]

As I mentioned in my last Spa Day Diary entry, we have a brand new manager at The Spa. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t apprehensive about welcoming her onto our team. I was just growing comfortable with my job when she arrived, and I was nervous she would disrupt what I had grown accustomed to. While she had many positive compliments for us, she wasted no time letting us know how low our numbers were compared to our sister spas. I was worried that her pleasant demeanor was almost too pleasant, and I was waiting for her to snatch off her mask and show her true colors as the Rigid BitchMaster of the Spa Suprème. I was wrong, thankfully, and she is actually one of my favorite managers ever.

Don’t get me wrong; she is definitely about her business. She is quick to let us know where we are falling short and what we need to do, but she does it in a way that encourages us to be better and work harder. I believe our new manager has brought a necessary matriarchal energy to The Spa that complements us perfectly, as our store is owned and operated by a man. Her approach is very different than his, and I find she has enhanced my employee experience already. Because of her, I am more motivated to strive for excellence on the job.

Like a true leader, she makes it exciting to succeed. We play bingo, and if we sell a certain amount of services, upgrades and products, we win a $15 Wawa gift card. Last month we hosted our first spa party, which centered around essential oils. The spa party was probably the most fun shift of my whole employment at The Spa. I even sold 4 memberships that night, which almost made up for my post-Pittsburgh dry spell. After the Spa Party, my coworkers and I all went to Applebee’s for food and drinks, and it felt like family for the first time.

Now that Jupiter is in Cancer for the next year, we are all seeking the meaning of life in the realm of feelings. Our feelings are influenced primarily by the ones who are close enough to fit in the crab shells we call home, and from this emotional intimacy we gain wisdom, knowledge and philosophical insight into the big picture. It is beneficial to embrace the familiar and the strange alike during this transit, as sometimes we are all in desperate need of a place to belong. Cancer is regarded as the Mother of the Zodiac, and this motherly energy is exacerbated by the transits of the Sun and Mercury [and the New Moon, coming soon] through this nurturing, protective sign.

duality

MARS in GEMINI

Focus becomes farcical, so we are more productive when we multitask. We are without a doubt mentally flexible, but in order to avoid a nervous breakdown and balance this energy, we must keep our bodies just as limber as our minds. Our actions may seem to contradict our words at this time, but The Twins represent the duality of mind and body, and they reserve the right to experience life from every possible point of view. Remember, when in doubt, do both!
