beyoncé, as a goddess: oshún [#StarsAndSymbols]

here at shady sun, we believe that, whether they are conscious of it or not, the most enduringly successful pop cultural icons enrich their work with the symbolism of an acutely deliberate variety. drawing from the rich [and often intersecting] archetypes of astrology, numerology, mythology, tarot, etc, the themes and motifs of these “stars” seem to parallel certain legends that live immortalized in the collective unconscious. the existence of the famous figure bears a striking resemblance to something we’ve seen all before, at some point, in another dimension maybe, but it’s unique enough to keep us engaged as if we haven’t already seen unfold this story.

beyonce-makeup-9-500x500.jpg

when we reconnect with our roots, we see the world with new eyes. as i study ifa, santería and voodoo, my lens to the outside world, particularly pop culture, has a fresh filter. just as i did, many others who are and have been familiar with this way of life are claiming a connection between lemonade, beyoncé’s latest offering, and the spirit of the afro-cuban deity oshún.

f764a20e0e6d9f637907de235fdecad6.jpg

oshún is an orisha. to give praise where it’s due, she is one of the most celebrated orishas. for those of us who have never encountered them by name, the orishas are divine forces of nature that are revered, channeled, followed and praised for their supernatural powers and graceful guardianship. 2db94430e52a262324a0e3ccaf819ba1

if we all come from africa, one would posit that the greco-roman pantheon of gods is a derivative of this african ensemble of supernatural entities. if so, oshún would be foremother of aphrodite/venus, goddess of love and luxury. in that vein, oshún is regarded as the sweetest and most beautiful of all the orishas, the one we turn to when we wish to attract life’s treasures and indulge in romance.

she is also sought out for relief from harsh conditions, such as when she lightened her skin and hair to accompany the west africans who were brought to caribbean as slaves. under catholic rule on the island of cuba, yoruba’s oshún was syncretized to our lady of charity, the saint who was called upon to aid the newly enslaved prisoners.

img_Our_Ladyof_Charity071011.jpg

it is because of oshún’s affinity for the finer things, as well as her ability to circulate and arouse love, she knows more than anyone else how it feels to live through oppressive circumstances such as poverty, oppression, rejection, neglect, and heartache. enter beyoncé.

2016: labor of love [#StarsAndSymbols]

womb[1]

it takes 9 months to carry a human child. before the pregnancy reaches full term, there is a process that mother and baby must mutually undergo during which each passing interval is as conducive as it is crucial to a healthy delivery. from conception to labor, everyone has an idea of what it’s going to be, but one never truly knows until the infant comes forth in its big debut. funny how a debut can double as a grand finale. there’s a thin, thin line between the two, and it blurs. i don’t mean to trigger a contraction, but if you look down, you might be surprised to find how close you have come to that line.

as with the developmental stage of any creation, names can change from moment to moment, shifting the vibration of the still-gestating entity. even after it has been christened, the consciousness of the creator must ascend to a certain height in order to finally behold the essence of the precious life that is being fostered in the totality of its glory.

in numerology, the study of numbers as metaphysical symbols, the goal is reduce every amount to a single digit through the mathematic process of addition. for example, the number 39 would be broken down to 3+9. Since 3+9= 12, the next task is to add 1+2, which leaves us with a single digit sum of 3. Now that we’ve arrived at a single digit number, we can start to explore the characteristics inherent in this number, as each of the single digits have their own individual traits and connotations.

now, let’s practically apply this little numerology lesson, shall we? take this new year, 2016. 2+0+1+6 = … 9! That makes 2016 a year that vibrates in alignment with the number 9, the highest and final single digit number. what does it all mean you ask? it might be in our best interest go explore the symbolism of 9 in numerology.

number-9-on-ocean-floorsince 9 is the highest number [excluding, of course, double digits and beyond] there is a lofty quality associated with this symbol. imagine reaching the mountaintop and taking in the elevated view. even the air breathes differently up here. it’s not quite heaven, but it’s feels close enough to rub off on you and change your perspective from one of rugged individuality [in the vain of the number 1] to one of universal awareness. 9 is a heightened state of mind and the insights that one brings down to earth when aligned with this number are sure to be enlightening.

as 9 oversees everything from above, it relates to global affairs and matters that concern the masses. this number endows a respectable degree of leadership unto anyone who invokes it. because of this, popularity is an attribute of people [9 life paths], places [buildings with addresses that equal 9], and things [the year 2016] that resonate with this 9 energy.

as with the high stakes, “ready-to-pop” ninth month of pregnancy, the frequency of the number 9 is one of inspiring excitement. ruled by the action-packed planet mars, 9 is a zealous energy. when this number is in effect, the people of the world are motivated by the promise of big projects, especially if the endeavor is attached in some way to a humanitarian cause. speaking of attachment, the shadow side of 9 is its propensity to be aloof, ungrounded in the present reality, and disconnected from one on one relationships. just like the mother who could go into labor at any minute, there are simply bigger, more urgent concerns with which the number 9 concerns itself. usually those concerns are driven by visionary idealism and utopian desires. remember, too, that mars is known in the occult world as the warrior god, so it wouldn’t be farfetched this year to witness intensified strife on an international level. sometimes, it has to get worse before it gets better.

hermit

in the traditional tarot deck, the hermit [card 9]  follows strength [card 8]. after conquering our fears, weaknesses, and insecurities with strength [2015 = 8], this archetype comes to a place of inner confidence, assured spiritually by the all the tests it has passed. like the hermit card, 2016 might be the year during which you reflect on the past through a lens that has never been as wise and all-seeing as it is now. no matter how dark it was and no matter how dark it could be in the future, there is an inextinguishable fire inside of everyone that burns as a guide to illuminate the path to deliverance, stoked by the love of ancestors and dearly beloved family members who have passed in the past 9 years or so. in this immortal light, everything that was a mystery starts to make a whole lot more sense.

an assignment of sorts:

make a mental note everything of significance that you remember from 2008. better, write down a physical list. now take that list and notice how many of the major themes of your life in the present moment made themselves apparent way back then in 2008. finally, if any of those ‘themes’ are still unsettled, make a wish for and visualize your ideal resolution in 2016. think of these resolutions as mantras. how can you can claim them if you don’t name them?

if nothing from 2008 rings a bell, make a list instead of 9 unresolved issues from any period of time that you would like to finalize. wish, visualize, mantra, same as above.

2016 is the year to wrap up all loose ends to reach enlightenment. 2016 is the year to come to a conclusion, because every beginning requires an ending [which is just another beginning in disguise]. 2016 is the year to reveal the labor of love that has been growing in the faceless, yet fertile darkness, finally!

As radiant as you are, the day is best seized by reflecting the the brilliance of The Ones you love. A warm embrace and a liberal lot of uplifting praise is your gift not only to your lovers, friends, and family, but also to expressively stifled strangers with whom you sympathize. Your soft-spot for those who are struggling with self-esteem issues activates the nurturing instinct in you, and in response, you do your best to make apparent the extraordinary qualities you see exuding from bodies, both physical and metaphysical, external to yourself.

Ever heard of Captain Save A Hoe? Yeah… Nobody wants to be that guy. Trying to rescue everyone who crosses your path isn’t possible, and if it were, it still wouldn’t be practical. Everyone has their own lives to live and their own choices to make.

So, what if the one who needs assistance is a close family, a lover, or a friend? So what! Sometimes you have to draw the line between what you can and can’t do for other people. The Ones closest to you have a way of wielding guilt when your actions defy their expectations, which are based on the role they have created for you to play in their soap opera, but that is not your burden to carry. You have the right to deny anyone who attempts to modify or manipulate your behavior for their own emotional amelioration and psychological security. Rip the script or at least rewrite it in your own words.

boundary_fullEstablishing clearly defined boundaries doesn’t make you any less of a perfect partner [as if that were even a thing]. Contrary to what you may believe, adopting interpersonal discrimination serves to empower both parties. As compassionate as you may be, you sabotage your own wellbeing when your livelihood is dependent upon other people’s peace of mind. Continue reading

freedom is beautiful, but let’s not abuse it. use it wisely. explore your limits. disregard the ones that are rooted in pain and define the ones that are conducive to a job well done. establishing your own boundaries will help you to stay on track today, and as long as your vision is specific, you will be pleased with what you are able to accomplish. focus guarantees fulfillment.

Solutions to the trickiest troubles come instinctually today, like second nature. You have the innate ability to comprehend the grand scheme while simultaneously tuning in to the smaller patterns at work, rearranging them if you see something that could function more effectively. Try to recall a problem you put aside and chances are you will see it differently than you’ve ever seen it before.

You are just brimming with original perceptions and one of them might make you famous. Anything is possible when you are at one with your creative potential. All you have to do is strategize, fertilize, and synchronize your actions with your vision.
That is the key to manifesting your conceptions.

trine to get along! [#StarsAndSymbols]

In a world where so many feel misunderstood, how great is it to be involved with someone who knows where you’re coming from? In astrology, the people who share the same dominant element as you [fire, earth, air, or water] are most likely to have compatible energetic compositions.

For example, if you identify as an Aquarius, you are inclined to play well with Gemini and Libra, for these are the 3 signs that comprise the “air” element in astrology. In other words, signs of the same element are relatively easy matches because their essential qualities are most familiar to each other. The relationship between 2 signs of the same element is called a trine [tri = 3… each element is comprised of 3 signs].

astrology-aspect-trine

FYI – There is also a relationship – or aspect as we call them in astrology – called a sextile, where the element of one sign harmonizes with a sign of a similar, albeit different  element [fire/air, earth/water]. We will not be focusing on the sextile aspect for the purpose of this post, as we will be examining the pros and cons of the trine aspect [and later on… the aspect known as the conjunction].

Let’s get started, shall we?

tasty participation: 8/17/14 [#MyBestWeek]

screen-shot-2014-01-13-at-3-46-03-am

a whole bunch of us have had a hard time actually beholding the apples of our respective eyes, but this just might be the moment for us to take the first bite. in life, what is materialized is not always in alignment with what we had in mind, and that is why it would be beneficial to employ the law of attraction. some prizes are not to be pursued, but pulled in with magnetism and then devoured.

aspiring to greater associations is the difference between feast and famine. we are the company we keep, so why not link up with people who are on the same wavelength, with the intention of arriving at a similar destination? there may be an assortment of new connections that are made this week, and since it is impossible to know the blessings that these new affiliations could potentially bestow upon us, we would be wise to save room in our social networks for some fresh faces. as the saying goes, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” when we least expect it, after ages of rejection, delay, and failure, the very thing we covet could fall right into our laps. stress and anxiety of an uncertain future expires when we leverage our partnerships to the fullest capacity in the present. after all, we come into each other’s lives for a reason, usually because one has something that the other needs, so there is no shame in sharing what we got!

the roots & the tree: capricorn full moon [#StarsAndSymbols]

one of the great things about roots is how they provide the tree with the support necessary to uphold its composure as it climbs great heights. if there is no foundation, there is no growth. that said, the fullest way for the tree to honor its roots is to challenge itself to reach higher than it ever has. after all, isn’t that the purpose of planting seeds in the first place?

with the sun in cancer, we are focused on the acknowledgment of the deepest, most familiar facets of our personhood. to nourish and protect the life force within is the instinct that keeps each species going from generation to generation. It may not always make rational sense, but thanks to intuition and the assortment of other gifts stored away in our ancestral goodie bags, we know what we have to do at any given moment to preserve this fragile existence. to sustain our lineage is encoded in our dna.

before we get too comfortable, we must remember that no matter how well acclimatized we are, every season presents its challenges. without the occasional obstacle, the experience of life would be too subjective to sustain the dynamism of authentic expression in all its completeness. that is where the full moon in capricorn, which opposes the cancer sun, comes into play. we are feeling the subconscious call to endeavor toward the practical attainment of worldly accomplishment. our survival skills mean little if we do not at some point assume responsibility for the successful advancement of the family name beyond the home and into the stratosphere of society. the tangible achievements we need to satisfy this obscure hunger are the products of structure, goals, and concentrated motivation.

ecstatic employment: 7/6/14 [#MyBestWeek]

Screen shot 2014-01-13 at 3.46.03 AM

being a public example of the precision and efficiency of purposeful self-containment will satiate our karmic desire to progress toward the destiny of this current incarnation. there is something fulfilling about going back to basics and tending to the duties that require our devotion. conditions cannot be improved for anyone or anything unless they receive an adequate amount of tlc, and the survival of the species alone is incentive enough for us to swallow our pride and get to work. the goal is to enhance the community and society, but we must start on an individual level, with the inspiring enhancement of ourselves.
